franklinpierceThe bust of Franklin Pierce, America’s 14th President was formally dedicated Tuesday afternoon in honor of Thomas E. Hassan, Phillips Exeter Academy’s 14th Principal. The bust which resides in the Class of 1945 Library’s Rockefeller Hall is the gift of Joseph P. Nadeau ’55; P’98, Catherine L. Nadeau P’98, and Briana L. Nadeau ’98.

The bust is signed F. Vincenti, and dated 1854. Francis Vincenti was an Italian artisan employed as a stonecutter at the Capitol from 1853 to 1858. The bust was sculpted during the presidency of Franklin Pierce. Modeled first in clay, it was then carved in marble in a Capitol workshop.
